Self Introduction

When you meet someone for the first time, it is important to introduce yourself so that the other person can get to know you.

On this page, you can learn how to introduce yourself in everyday life and at work.

First Greeting/Last greeting

When introducing yourself, start by saying “初はじめまして。私わたしの名前なまえは〇〇です”.

And at the end of your self-introduction, you say “よろしくお願ねがいします”.

The simplest self-introduction is to just say first and last greetings.

However, in order to let the other person get to know you, after the first greeting, you will often introduce yourself by giving your nickname, country of origin or some other information about yourself before making your last greeting.

Below we explain various phrases that you can use between the first and last greetings of your self-introduction.

However, in Japanese self-introduction, there is nothing you must say except for the first and last greetings, so you don’t need to say anything you don’t want to say. For example, if you don’t want to talk about your family or your age, you don’t need to say it in your self-introduction.

Tell About Nickname

When telling about your nickname, you say “〇〇と呼よんでください” after telling your name in the first greeting,

Tell About Country of Origin

When telling about your country of origin, you say “〇〇から来きました” or “出身しゅっしんは〇〇です”.

Tell About Hobby

When telling about your hobbies or interests, you say “趣味しゅみは〇〇です”, “好すきな食たべ物ものは〇〇です”, “好すきなスポーツは〇〇です”, “〇〇が好すきです”, etc.

Tell About Your Family

When telling about your family, you say “家族かぞくは〇〇人にんです”.

When telling about your family members (father, mother, brothers, sisters, etc.), you say “〇〇と〇〇と〇〇がいます”. When telling about where your family lives, you say “〇〇に住すんでいます”.

Tell About Age

When telling about your age, you say “〇〇歳さいです”.

Tell About Occupation

When telling about your occupation (office worker, student, etc.), you say “職業しょくぎょうは〇〇です”.

Tell About Work

When telling about the name of your company or where you work, you say “〇〇で働はたらいています”.

When telling about your job (customer service, cooking, etc.), you say “〇〇の仕事しごとをしています”.

When introducing yourself at work, if you want to tell people which department you belong to, you say “部署ぶしょは〇〇です”.

Tell About School

When telling about your school (Japanese language school, vocational school, etc.), you say “〇〇で勉強べんきょうしています”.

When telling about what you are studying (Japanese, etc.), you say “〇〇を勉強べんきょうしています”.
