Question Sentence Format

To make a question sentence in Japanese, add “か” to the end of the sentence.

In addition, when speaking, use a rising intonation at the end of the sentence.

When writing a question sentence, you can either put a “?” mark at the end or not, but putting one makes it clear that the sentence is a question.

A negative question sentence is a question sentence that combines a negative statement with a question sentence.

Affirmative Question Sentence

An affirmative question sentence is a question sentence that can be answered with yes or no.

An interrogative word question sentence is a question sentence that asks for an answer other than yes or no.

An interrogative word question sentence contains an interrogative word within the sentence. In Japanese, there are various interrogative words depending on the purpose of the question.

Add “か” to the end of the sentence and use a rising intonation at the end of the sentence when speaking.

Negative Question Sentence

A negative question sentence is a question sentence that combines a negative statement with a question sentence.

When Talking with a Close Person

When talking with close friends, family, etc., you don’t use “です” or “ます” at the end of a question sentence, and you don’t even add “か” to the end of the question sentence.

When speaking, use a rising intonation at the end of the sentence.

There are many cases where no subject is added.

This change is common to all four types of question sentences.

In this case, adding “か” to the end of the sentence makes the phrase sound very unreserved, and although it may be used by an older person to a younger person, it is not used very often.
